How to Easily Apply for a Japan Tourist Visa (and some tips…)

Get your Japanese Tourist Visa with this quick n' easy guide, and let me share with you my experience as well.
How to apply for a Japan Tourist Visa

It was really great news when Japan announced last year that the Japanese Government will be relaxing the visa requirements for us Filipinos. Most of us are really excited in visiting Japan – so here are the simple requirements in getting a Japan Tourist Visa. Just complete below requirements, go to one of the accredited travel agencies by the Japan Embassy, pay the fee (approx. Php1200-2000, depending on which agency you choose), and wait for the results from the agency. Please note that I will only discuss Japan TOURIST visa application in this article, since I have experienced applying for this type only.

*Also note that visa rules may change at any time so please be sure to visit Japan Embassy’s website for the latest information or call one of their accredited agencies (see below list).

My tips and experiences when applying for a Japan Visa

  1. Do not go to your chosen travel agency (updated list below) without having completed your requirements. If you have questions, just call the agency first.
  2. To streamline the process and to avoid multiple travels to and from the agency, make sure you have every item in the checklist completed before going to the agency.
  3. What caused the delay in my application is my Birth Certificate from NSO. Dang, I waited too long for my Birth Cert! I already had all my other requirements but I still was unable to submit my application due to this. I didn’t know that applying through the official e-census.com.ph website will take 3-5 days (excluding weekends and holidays) AFTER your payment. That is if you live in Metro Manila. In my case, it had to take 5 working days for me to receive the much awaited letter. If I knew applying online through the official website would take that long, I would’ve just coursed my request through 3rd party provider NSOHelpline.com (Update: I think they’re now called PSAHelpline.ph). Delivery with PSAHelpline.ph takes only 1 to 2 working days. Take note that they have a phone number 8737-1111 you can call.
  4. To save on costs, call the agencies from the list provided by Japan Embassy to inquire how much their processing fee is. Fees range from Php1200-2000 – it will be best if you can save at least Php800 by finding the right agency. As for me, I’ll be applying at Universal Holidays. Their office is at Dusit Thani Hotel, and they only charge Php1200 for the service.
  5. UPDATE: My friends and I have this theory that having a South Korean tourist visa (single or multiple entry) allows you to be granted a multiple entry visa to Japan and vice versa even when applying for the first time. Okay there were a lot of us (including friends of friends) who’ve applied for a Japan (JP) tourist visa just this year and those who have already had a South Korean (SK) tourist visa were all granted multiple entry visas even if it will be their first visit to Japan (some have US visa, some do not). My other friend and I have multiple entry visas to the US but do not have SK visa (I’ve been to Seoul, SK for a 12-hour day tour but the visa requirement was waived since I was en route to the US at the time so I did not need to apply for one – I’ll tell you this exciting story in another article), and we were only granted a single entry visa. It seems like there’s a friendship thing going on between the two northern Asian nations, hence, our simple theory.  Of course, this will be up to you but if you are with me in this tip#5, you could just directly apply for a free (yes, they do not charge a single fee) SK visa at their Taguig consulate office to try and see if you’ll be granted a multiple entry JP tourist visa just by doing so. Plus, the requirements are almost the same as with applying for a JP visa so it will be easier if you decide to try tip#5.

See below the summarized list of requirements plus the list of accredited travel agencies that you can call if in case you have questions regarding the requirements and the fees. Requirements may change over time so it is best to confirm with the agency first before heading  there with your requirements. Happy trip!

6Bank Certificate – Can be requested from your bank branch for a fee (usually ₱300 to ₱350). If you have investments with the bank, bring the certificates as well so they can be included in your bank certificate.
7Income Tax Return (Form 2316) original and photocopy. You can get this from your HR if you are working in a company.

Note: If your Income Tax Return is not available and there is no ADB (Average Daily Balance) on your Bank Certificate, you must submit Bank Statement to prove transaction for the last 3 months.
8Employment Certificate from your HR (must indicate period of employment, salary and position)

For business owners, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Certificate of Business Name
Registration and Mayor’s Permit must be submitted.
– If you are unable to submit the Form 2316 and Employment Certificate for any reason other than being a retiree, full-time housewife or unemployed, a letter of explanation about the reason must be submitted.
– For students, submit a copy of your School ID or Certificate of Enrollment.
9Copy of your Plane Ticket (must be Round Trip). – Major update: This is no longer required by the Embassy. In fact, they now discourage applicants from purchasing a ticket prior to applying for a visa.

Update: Japan Tourist Visa Requirements for second time application

The requirements are the generally the same, except that some of the requirements would no longer be required for your second application (if your application was approved the first time). If you have USED your single entry visa the first time for a trip to Japan and would need another visa, there is no need for Birth Certificate or Marriage Certificate – whew!

Also since you were able to visit and return from Japan the first time, you can request for a Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa as long as you meet their requirements (more on this below) and most likely they’ll be granting you a multiple-entry visa valid for 5 years (hopefully).

  1. Visa Application Form
  2. Valid passport, and also your passport with Japan visa and immigration stamps
  3. ITR (Income Tax Return – Form 2316)
  4. Bank Certificate
  5. 45mm ×35mm or 2in x 1.4in with white background, must be pasted in the application form
  6. Schedule / Itinerary
  7. Certificate of Employment (COE) – not required but good to have

How to request for a Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa

If you want to request for a Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa, you can do so by filling out this form. Note that if you request for a Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa, some agencies may charge you an additional fee (usually ₱500). Depending on the agency you choose, ff your application for a multiple entry visa gets approved the agency will keep the fee but if your application gets rejected, you usually will get your fee back.

Update 2024: As of June 2024, the Japan Embassy has updated their guidelines for Philippine Nationals with considerable financial capacity who are applying for Multiple-Entry Temporary Visitor Visa (with stays up to 90 days). Please refer to this announcement for more info.

kahit na may US visa na multiple entry eh chances parin na ma approve? sayang nmn kasi pag bumili nmn ng plane ticket at ma deny pa.

Yes better if with visas to other countries and with history of past travel. Of course, for those with no prior travel history, of course may chance pa din, it all depends on the documents that will be provided.

Planning to go to japan with my husband and 2 sons maybe dec or next year. ask ko lang po ano po requirement for a housewife and students po.

Yes this is definitely possible! Being denied a visa from one country totally does not mean you are denied from applying to other countries. 🙂

  • Hello!
I have plans of applying for a tourist visa on May. It will only be for 4days. My Japanese friend will be my guarantor. My reasons of visiting Japan are the ff:
    1. Meet my Japanese friend and go around Tokyo.
    2. Visit the Japanese school I will be entering on Autumn.
Do you think I still need to submit an ITR, COE and bank Certificate? If yes, I have funds on my bank cert so there will be no problem. As for ITR, I was issued a form2316 last year prior to my resignation. So I am no longer connected with the company. As of now, I am working as an independent contractor and being taxed by the company I am connected with. Can I use my ITR from last year?
The Japanese school I will be entering will also provide a letter of invitation as proof since I will include it on my itinerary.
    Thanks a lot! 🙂

Hello Anne, yes you need to prove your income by means of ITR, Bank Cert and COE. Since the last ITR you have was from last year, you can use your last ITR and provide a letter of explanation on why you do not have ITR for the current year.
Also since you mentioned you have a sponsor, your friend be the one to show financial proof.
Good luck and enjoy your trip! 🙂

  • thank you:) 🙂

  • I have a question. For currently employed, do I really need to present also a letter of approved leave from my manager?

Thanks for this post! I am planning to apply this week. I already traveled to S.Korea just last year and was granted a multiple entry visa. This is my first time to travel to Japan. Question: Did your friends (the ones who were approved of multiple entry to Japan that had S.Korea visa) applied for multiple entry visa or did they applied for single but was given multiple? Thanks for your reply!

  • Ayaw ko na po sana mag book. Pano po ung sa itinerary? Db po may part dun na need ng contact details and address? Salamat po ng marami sa pagresponse

  • Hi po. Good day.

    Thanks Jack, and sure thing!
Yes, for OFWs, ITR is not required (as confirmed with a travel agency). But before you leave for the Philippines, please secure a certificate of employment (COE) from your HR to prove that you are currently employed. Otherwise if you are unable to get your COE, you will have to write a letter addressed to the Japan embassy explaining the lack of COE from your requirements.
    Enjoy your trip!

hi there, i applied yesterday at reli travel and tours, the only amt i was able to declare in my bank acc was 80k. originally the itinerary was set up for 10 days, but he told me to change it to 4 days to increase the chances of getting my visa approved. completed all documents.. i’m working and got itr, submitted addt’l doc including coe. i hope i do get it. i still have 3 months to save more for the trip , but in case ill be approved ,will i be able to stay up to 15 days in japan , i think that was the maximum days for every Filipino temporary visitor? Japan immigration wouldn’t tell me, ‘oh hey you just placed 4 days in the visa app form ,so u should only stick with that”. i have the option to stay in japan up to 15 days as long as it will not exceed right? Sorry i got so many questions again , it’s just driving me nuts, i just really want to go to japan this dec, as this a dream come true for an anime lover like me. thank you! :)ps: i haven’t got the flights yet, but i think it will cost me roughly 16-17k, and for the hotel, me and my friends will divide the cost. – claucons

Hello Claucons, thanks and ask away!
The 15-day max stay allowance as stated on your visa is good as is. That means you can book a flight that allows you to stay for 15 days or extend your 4-day tour to 15 days since that’s what’s stated on your visa. The thing is (and as with any other cases, with visa requirement or without), immigration officer at the port of entry can choose to shorten your stay, but it’s not likely to happen (but yes, they can do that).
Enjoy your trip Claudine! I’m sure you’re gonna fall in love with Japan! 🙂

              • claucons

omg! thank u so much for responding ! thank thank u so much! ! sobrang nabobother lang ako kase this is just 2nd time travelling outside the country, first was singapore, then japan. huhuh. medyo sigurista lang ako. pero yes, do i need to show money once i arrived in japan? or ishow lang un return flight right? anyway , i hope that immigration officer would not shorten my stay huhu. . and like what u said it’s not likely to happen, ive asked those from the agency , they were the ones who told me to just put 4 days to increase chances of getting approved, and they said max is 15 days.. i just wanted to hear that from u as well , u been such a great help for me. i would update u if i get my visa approved. hope u have great day – claucons 🙂

hehe you’re welcome Claucons! Always glad to help. And yes, let us know how it goes! 🙂
About the show money, generally they will not request it from you, but you need to have it just in case they ask to see it. You do not have to bring the whole amount that’s in your bank account (showing 80k doesn’t mean you’re gonna spend it all), just your actual pocket money that you intend to spend in Japan will do.
The return ticket is important – they will definitely ask to see it!
Good that you also asked your agency – I really don’t think they will shorten your stay, it’s just 15 dang days wag na nila ipagkait sayo haha. Malabo mangyari yun.
It’s great that you’ve done all your research very well, now you just have to relax and enjoy the experience! 🙂
Glad I was able to help you out on this, Claucons! Let us know how it goes!

Hi , do i really need to submit the copy of airplane tickets ? because i’m planning on buying the airplane tickets after submitting the visa and if it was approved.. i don’t know i’m just kind of scared of getting my visa denied then if i already had the tickets . i have all the requirements, coe, birth certifcate, itr, etc. but im worried about the bank certificate. how much would be the minimum amount of money you should have on the bank. let’s say i plan to stay there for 10 days.. ? thank u so much 🙂
i plan to go this december 2016

Hello Claucons, thanks for commenting. Yes you do need a copy of your plane tickets-this also shows your itinerary already, with the arrival and return dates in the ticket. What you can do is that since you’ll be applying with a travel agency anyway (listed above) and they have the power to create mock bookings, you can ask if they can create a sample booking for you, which you’ll then pay for or cancel depending on the embassy’s decision.
About the pocket money, I’m thinking 100K in your bank account for more than three months looks good enough.
      Enjoy your trip! 🙂

      • Hi, what if I avail a plane ticket (promo ticket) on Dec 2016 but my plan is i’ll apply for visa probably May-June 2017. Is my plane ticket valid for visa application? Is there any required validity for plane tix? Thanks!

          A

Hello Anon, thanks! Do you mean you’ll purchase a plane ticket for 2017 on Dec 2016 and use it sometime after your visa application is approved in 2017? If that’s the case then yes, by all means.
Your plane ticket is valid as long as your flight dates are scheduled after your planned date to apply for a visa. Take note that if issued a SINGLE entry visa, you have to use it within three months so schedule your flights accordingly. 🙂

  • Hi for the birth certificate is it really required that I submit the Original with receipt? I don’t have the receipt any more but the birth certificate is valid within the year. thanks.

      A

Hello Rara, yes the receipt is required since this will be the basis for the issue date and validity of your birth certificate (BC). Since you don’t have the receipt with you, it’s best to contact one of the embassy accredited travel agencies listed above to find out if they will accept BCs with no receipt. Who knows, they might allow it. 🙂

      • I screened shot the payment and delivery status from the NSOhelpline site, do you think it would be enough as an evidence that the BC is valid for this year?

        • Avatar photo
          A

Hello Rara, I’m thinking a screenshot of the order status will not be sufficient evidence for the embassy’s review. It is best to contact one of the accredited agencies above to find out if they will accept BCs with no receipt..

  • Hi. I just have a question with regard to SK visa. let’s say I applied and got approved, but did not use it, do you think the chance of getting a japan visa will be high? I hope you can enlighten me a bit on this one. Tia. 🙂

      A

Hey RM, thanks for commenting! I think you have a good chance of getting that visa. Aside from Japan embassy already relaxing its requirements to Filipinos (I’m assuming you are) and citizens of other South-East Asian nations, not using your approved SK visa means you were STILL issued a visa. Heck, even those who don’t have SK visa are getting approved, so why not you? 🙂
P.S. I’m no immigration expert LOL but yeah these are just my thoughts based on my experience figuring out visa requirements.

  • Andy BN

    Good day to you sir!
    Here are my few questions:
    1. We visited South Korea last April, so I was granted a single entry visa way back then. Will that be a big positive factor of being granted a Japanese visa also?
    2. Is the plane ticket really required?
We are planning to visit Tokyo for the Cherry blossoms next year perhaps late March. God-willing, we’ll be granted a visa. Just the two of us, me and my girlfriend.

Hi Andy, great plan bro! I’m sure you’re gonna have an awesome time in Tokyo.
      1. Although I’m in no position to decide your fate, I think YES you have a big chance of getting approved
      2. Yes, a plane ticket is really required by the embassy
As long as you meet ALL their requirements (esp the proof of financial capability), I don’t see any reason for denial. (disclaimer again: no immigration expert here LOL).
      Enjoy your trip!

  • Hi! I stopped from working and I don’t have any job now coz I continued my studies. Do you have any tips for those who are planning to get a JP tourist visa for students like me? Thanks

    • Avatar photo
      A

Hi Cheese, thanks for commenting. Just confirmed this with Universal Holidays:
      1. If your expenses will be shouldered by your parent/guardian, no need to submit your own financial documents. Your guarantor should be the one providing proof of income.
      2. If you will be shouldering your Japan tour, and since you are a student, you can provide the following: bank certificate, letter of explanation addressed to Japan embassy on why you do not have an ITR, and a copy of your student ID.
      3. If you are a full time student, do not have a bank cert, and you will shouldering your own expenses, better open your own bank account already 🙂

  • Did you apply for multiple entry? The fees vary so I’m wondering if there is a possibility that the Embassy will grant multiple entry even if you paid for single entry only.

    • Avatar photo
      A

      Hello, thanks for commenting.
I did not apply for multiple entry – you only have to apply for a tourist visa with the help of your chosen accredited travel agency and the Japan embassy will be the one to decide if they will give you a single entry or a multiple entry visa.
The variation of fees depends on the travel agency – they set the price for their own services, so it’s better to inquire with the above accredited travel agencies first on their pricing (pricings change) to find out which one offers the service for the most reasonable price. 🙂
      Thank you!

  • Potassium21

Did you wait for months to have your visa? Or it just took you days to have it?

    • Avatar photo
      A

      Hello Potassium21,
Nope it did not take that long. 🙂
      1. I submitted my requirements to the agency on a Thursday
      2. Agency (Universal Holidays, in my case) txted me the next day (Friday) that my application was already lodged with the Japan Embassy
      3. Agency txted me on the next business day (Monday) that my passport was ready for pick-up.
So it only took 3 working days for me, maybe because Japan has already relaxed its Visa requirements for the South East Asian nations, including the Philippines.
Let me know if you have other questions. I hope you enjoy your Japan trip as much as I did!

  • Roma April

Hey Claucons! Were you able to get your visa?

  • Avatar photo

Thanks John for commenting. The accredited travel agencies do not inform results via text/phone call (and they’re strict about it). Instead, they will have you pick up your visa and find out for yourself once you turn the pages of your passport.

How to apply for a Japan Tourist Visa

How to Easily Apply for a Japan Tourist Visa (and some tips…)

Get your Japanese Tourist Visa with this quick n' easy guide, and let me share with you my experience as well.

omg! thank u so much for responding ! thank thank u so much! ! sobrang nabobother lang ako kase this is just 2nd time travelling outside the country, first was singapore, then japan. huhuh. medyo sigurista lang ako. pero yes, do i need to show money once i arrived in japan? or ishow lang un return flight right? anyway , i hope that immigration officer would not shorten my stay huhu. . and like what u said it’s not likely to happen, ive asked those from the agency , they were the ones who told me to just put 4 days to increase chances of getting approved, and they said max is 15 days.. i just wanted to hear that from u as well , u been such a great help for me. i would update u if i get my visa approved. hope u have great day – claucons 🙂

hehe you’re welcome Claucons!

Thanks!

I don’t have the receipt any more but the birth certificate is valid within the year. thanks.

Hello Rara, I’m thinking a screenshot of the order status will not be sufficient evidence for the embassy’s review. It is best to contact one of the accredited agencies above to find out if they will accept BCs with no receipt..

  • Hi. I just have a question with regard to SK visa. let’s say I applied and got approved, but did not use it, do you think the chance of getting a japan visa will be high? I hope you can enlighten me a bit on this one. Tia. 🙂

Thanks

      Thank you!

Did you wait for months to have your visa? Or it just took you days to have it?

Thanks John for commenting. The accredited travel agencies do not inform results via text/phone call (and they’re strict about it). Instead, they will have you pick up your visa and find out for yourself once you turn the pages of your passport.
