JR Chuo Line train + transfer to Fujikyu Railway
A flexible alternative is taking the JR Chuo Line from Shinjuku to Otsuki Station, then transferring to the Fujikyu Railway Line for the scenic 50-minute ride to Kawaguchiko. This is the cheapest way to reach Kawaguchiko using public trains, making this a great option for budget travelers.

Is there a Shinkansen option?
Technically, yes — but it’s not recommended unless you have a JR Pass and are already traveling the Tokaido Shinkansen line. Here’s a sample route and sample time / fare calculation:
- Route:
- Take a Shinkansen (Kodama or Hikari) from Tokyo or Shinagawa Station to Mishima Station (~55 min)
- Transfer to a Fujikyu or local bus to Kawaguchiko Station (~1 hr 40 min)
- Total Time: ~2.5 to 3 hours
- Total Fare: ~¥5,000–¥6,000 (non-JR Pass)
Why it’s not practical:
- Requires multiple transfers
- No real time savings
- Costs more than direct or local train options
Only worth considering if you’re already heading toward Kyoto or Osaka and want to detour briefly but still.
