One look at this Instant Microwaveable Omurice (¥410) while window shopping at Kaldi Coffee Farm and I knew I just had to try it. I love me some omurice and would love the idea of having omurice any time – you just need two eggs and 600w microwave and you got yourself an omurice.

Kaldi Coffee Farm’s instant omurice contains two packets inside:
- Japanese rice packet (uncooked)
- Packet of diced vegetables with carrots, green peas, corn bits, and other vegetables in tomato sauce
The only other thing you need are two fresh eggs, beaten (not included in pack).

How to cook Kaldi’s instant omurice:
- Combine two packets into the omurice plate, then microwave for 3 minutes (covered with the plastic top that came with the package so the mixture doesn’t dry out)
- Add the two beaten eggs, then microwave for another 2 minutes (covered)
- Top with ketchup and enjoy
As it’s being cooked, it smelled ketchupy already, as if I was cooking a ketchup stew.

Kaldi Coffee Farm’s Instant Omurice: was it a yay or a nay?
As for the final product: it’s very eggy, and very moist as it was covered while inside the microwave. The rice mixture was very tomatoey, with veggie cubes adding texture in each bite.

As good as it sounded, the instant omurice was not without its flaws. My main complaint would be that the rice, although edible, was very chewy and compact like a brick – I suppose it need more time in the microwave to fully cook the rice although I already cooked it for a total of 5 minutes like it stated in the packaging.

Overall, although it was an ok experience which I suppose would be a lot better had I put in more minutes in the microwave, I’d rather have my omurice freshly cooked with perfectly cooked velvety eggs, real meat, fresh veggies and sauce in a proper Japanese restaurant, thank you very much.
But if your Japan trip is almost over and you want to be able to have Omurice straight from Japan whenever you want it, then this is a good alternative to fresh omurice in a real Japanese restaurant or izakaya. If this is the case then my suggestion probably would be to cook the rice properly in proper cookware and it will probably be a soft rice making for a better instant omurice. 🙂
