Book Off Japan: The Treasure Hunt You Didn’t Know You Needed

If you’ve ever wandered around Japan and spotted a big, bold BOOK OFF sign, you’ve just discovered one of the country’s best-kept secrets. Book Off isn’t just a secondhand bookstore – it’s a treasure chest disguised as retail, like a flea market but indoors. Step into a Book Off in Japan and the first thing you’ll notice is… everything. Neatly stacked dirt-cheap manga towers, shelves of video games you forgot existed, vintage CDs and DVDs that look straight out of your high school years, and the random collectibles you never knew you wanted until you saw them.

It’s sensory overload, but in the best way possible.

Second Hand Japanese Books at Book Off
Of course Book Off wouldn’t be complete without their used books section. There are thousands of books at any Book Off – a perfect retreat for bookworms.

Founded in 1991, Book Off (part of the same retail family as Mode Off and Hard Off) has grown into Japan’s largest chain of secondhand shops where everything is pre-loved but still in amazing condition yet in second-hand prices. You can score a bestseller or a manga volume for just a couple hundred yen (just a a few bucks). Book Off isn’t just solely about books though. Book Off has expanded way beyond books, with many of its stores (especially the massive “Super Bazaar” and even the “Book Off Plus+” branches) also selling clothes, bags, sporting goods, toys, home appliances, and sometimes even designer items.

Used Manga - One Piece, Grandline Series Ryuma, King of Artist the Sato, Spy x Family - and other collectibles and anime figures at Book Off
Otakus and anime fanatics rejoice because used manga, anime figures, and other collectibles are a staple at Book Off! Definitely need a visit at the nearest Book Off store with every trip to Japan.

For travelers, Book Off is both a budget-friendly goldmine and a cultural experience. Even if you don’t read Japanese, there’s still something fascinating in browsing shelves of manga, taking a look at the quirky CD covers, or hunting down retro video games that you can’t find anywhere else.

All the things you can find at a Book Off

Here’s what you can expect when walking into a Book Off:

  • Books & Manga: The obvious star of the show. Walls upon walls of manga, from blockbuster hits like One Piece to weird, niche titles you didn’t even know existed. Flip through a volume and suddenly you’re deep in the mind of Japanese pop culture.
  • Video Games: Retro cartridges, PS2 hits, and those odd collectibles that make hardcore gamers squeal in delight. 😀 If you thought your game collection was complete, Book Off will make you reconsider.
  • Music & Movies: Yes, CDs are still a thing here. And cheap ones, at that. DVDs and Blu-rays line the shelves too, so you can snag a bargain while exploring Japanese pop culture history.
  • Fashion & Accessories: Some of the larger Book Offs feature a “Mode Off” section. Think secondhand clothes, bags, and shoes that are oddly stylish, kind of quirky, and often shockingly affordable.
  • Random Household Stuff: Rice cookers, guitars, golf clubs – you name it. Somehow, some branch of Book Off has it lurking in a corner. You just never know what gem you might stumble upon next.

Where to Find a Book Off store (and Check Stock Before You Go)

Book Off stores are all over Japan and there’s probably one near you especially if you’re in major cities – if you want a full list of stores, the easiest way is to check the official Book Off website, which lists branches by city.

If you’re looking for a specific item and want to check first if a specific store has what you’re hunting for, that’s where Off Mall comes in: here you can browse for a specific Book Off branch and then check its inventory for manga, books, games, or CDs before even leaving your hotel. A heads-up though: the search feature is currently only in Japanese, so you’ll need the branch’s Kanji name to look it up. Hopefully, they make it English-friendly in the future.

Who knew Book Off also had a used clothes section?

Final Verdict: Is Book Off a must-visit in Japan? Absolutely yes! If you like surprises, bargains, or the thrill of finding something weirdly perfect, then yes. The best thing I like about visiting a Book Off store is that it’s a cultural experience on its own and at the same time you get to thrift and explore products that we simply never knew existed.

Sure you’ve got plenty of things to do on your Japan bucket list, but don’t underestimate the joy of walking out of a Book Off with a bag full of manga, an old Tamagotchi, and the strange satisfaction of knowing you spent less than 2,000 yen.
